Position Summary

The Material Planner/ Buyer is responsible for all daily activities required to monitor and maintain the flow of materials.  The Material Planner plans materials, releases purchase orders and/ or work orders for manufacturing in support of master production schedules.

Job Requirements

  • Responsible for the accuracy of the Materials Requisition Program (MRP) system as it relates to inventories, production planning, and order fulfillment
  • Provide annual and monthly forecasts to vendors.
  • Review and approve DCOs for new components releases and revision changes.
  • Review bill of material for structure, accuracy, and planning parameters to ensure they are set up appropriately.
  • Review and action excess and shortage reports
  • Manage/monitor backflush process.
  • Perform daily SAP system reviews and metric analysis to identify potential and actual material shortages, review order progress, material rejection, scrap, and rework; adjust plans and schedules as required by coordinating with appropriate manufacturing and materials personnel.
  • Communicate material requirements to suppliers to facilitate inventory deliveries and push-outs and expedites to ensure components are available to meet production schedules.
  • Create and maintain purchase orders and releases material against purchase orders to support production plan, service part plan and work orders.
  • Interface with Manufacturing, Engineering, Quality, Materials, Accounting and Product Management as required.
  • Continuously review product/processing using lean manufacturing techniques to identify potential opportunities to emphasize improvements within material movement and inventory management.
  • Complete special projects and assignments as requested by Materials Manager.
  • Reviews requisitions
  • Confers with vendors to obtain product or service information such as availability and delivery schedule.
  • Prepares purchase orders
  • Maintains procurement records such as items or services purchased, costs, delivery, product quality or performance, and inventories
  • Maintains acceptable inventory levels according to goals based on inventory turns and dollars
  • Discusses defective goods or services with quality control personnel, users, vendors, and others to determine source of trouble and take corrective action
  • Approves invoices for payment
  • Expedites delivery of goods to users

Required Education

4 year degree

Required Skills & Experience

  • Minimum 3 years successful experience in production planning role.
  • Experience with SAP (preferred) or other MRP system.
  • Experience working directly with suppliers.
  • Capacity planning experience.
  • Purchasing Experience
  • Must have demonstrated successful experience using MRP systems; demonstrated successful experience using SAP is highly preferred.
  • Advanced Excel skills required.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills required with a strong emphasis on detail.
  • Demonstrated success working in a fast-paced and demanding manufacturing environment is required.
  • Excellent analytical skills and flexibility to changing assignments.
  • Strong knowledge of Bills of Materials and Routings.
  • Working knowledge of manufacturing activities including purchasing materials, inventory, quality, engineering basics and production processes.
  • Highly organized, manage multiple tasks.
  • Ability to achieve results through both function and cross-functional communication and collaboration.

  • APICS certification
