Position Summary

The Director of Fleet Services provides direction to a large multi-state fleet of vehicles. The position will be domiciled in Charlotte, NC and will report directly to the Chief Services Officer. The objective of this position is to manage the operation and maintenance of the organization's motor vehicle fleet. The Director of Fleet Services will oversee DOT/HOS compliance and reporting as it relates to the fleet.
The Director of Fleet Services will provide input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility.

Job Requirements

  • Develop and implement vehicle and equipment preventive maintenance programs.
  • Develop, monitor, and communicate policies, procedures, and standards for operational improvement to minimize turnaround times, improve quality of repairs, and reduce customer costs.
  • Ensure standardization of Fleet Maintenance Programs and enforcement of the Fleet policies.
  • Manage fleet department budgets.
  • Develop and maintain outside vendor and service provider relationships.
  • Supervises the maintenance, operations and repairs of a large fleet which includes automobiles, DOT Trucks, Light Duty Trucks and Vans
  • Prepares and writes specifications for fleet automotive vehicles, equipment and accessories
  • Provides budget recommendations for fleet operations
  • Deals with authorized dealers, contractors, fleet maintenance vendors to maintain equipment and vehicles
  • Develops long range plans to purchase equipment and vehicles for the fleet
  • Estimates costs and sells off obsolete or surplus vehicles and equipment to auction company or public sales
  • Approves requisitions and purchase orders
  • Maintains warranties, licenses and registrations for all vehicles
  • Monitors warranty usage for entire fleet; Arranges for repair work according to warranty guidelines
  • Develops and implements a preventative maintenance program for entire fleet
  • Recommends appropriate methods and repairs to recondition the fleet
  • Instructs fleet employees and vendors in repair work as needed
  • Prepares written plans and specifications for the fabrication of fleet equipment
  • Supervises the building or re-building of specialized fleet vehicles
  • Investigates complaints received on vehicle condition and equipment failure
  • Makes appropriate arrangements to have inoperable vehicle or equipment repaired or towed
  • Prepares written reports, memorandum; effective presentations.
  • Develop fleet safety program, including the investigation of accidents involving fleet equipment and estimation of repair costs
  • Develop and track DOT, EPA, and OSHA compliance program
  • Develop Key Performance Metrics to include management dash boards.

Required Education

Bachelor's degree or equivalent experinece 
Required Skills & Experience

  • Capable of resolving escalated issues arising from operations and requiring coordination with other departments
  • 5-10+ years of managerial experience
  • Strong working knowledge of Hazardous Material (HAZMAT) regulations
  • FMCSA scoring system; DOT/HOS audit procedures, Professional Truck Defensive Driving techniques (SMITH, etc.)
  • Knowledge of standard fleet safety and compliance; fleet safety evaluations and investigations; fleet safety technology (E-Logs, etc.)
  • Working knowledge of State and Federal laws, guidelines, and requirements governing fleet maintenance management
  • Working knowledge in the principles, practices and procedures of asset management, life cycle cost management, and fleet maintenance management
  • Strong knowledge of risk management concepts
  • Thorough knowledge of the maintenance, operation, and repair of motor vehicle equipment of all types (e.g. automobiles, diesel engines, transmissions)
  • Strong knowledge of the principles of mechanical design
  • Strong knowledge of repair costs
  • Ability to act responsibly in an emergency situation
  • Ability to work with others; ability to manipulate an alpha-numeric keyboard;
  • Ability to effectively use computer applications such as spreadsheets, word processing, calendar, e-mail and database software
  • Resourceful and reliable
  • Sound technical judgement; initiative; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position
  • Must have a valid driver’s license
